Thanks to all who sent replies. I never did find the problem; in
the interest of "doing something useful" I created a new application
tree and moved in the required source. That did the trick.
I've still got the original tree and if time permits I'll compare it
to the new tree. It turns out that some work was done on the file
server "which could not have caused the problem." Oddly enough, other
application trees along side the one with the problem compiled fine.
Sigh! "Magic is loose in the world!"
