I would like to report that on June 17, the Duke Storage Ring and SR Free
Electron Laser have successfully completed the re-commissioned phase after
upgrades to the magnetic systems, power supplies, vacuum system and
controls system. The purpose of this round of upgrades was to increase
maximum energy from 1 GeV to 1.2 GeV and to improve operational
reliability and reproducibility.
The Duke storage ring had originally been commissioned in November, 1994
using EPICS R3.11. We are now using R3.13.5 for the storage ring and OK-4
FEL. During the course of this upgrade, extensive magnetic measurements
were made and power supplies were tested and tuned. We were able to take
advantage of this data to develop a control system for the storage ring
magnetic systems with all user inputs in ``physics'' units (i.e. Energy,
K1, K2, angle of deflection, rather then in Amps). This has greatly
increased ease of use for the physicists and allowed for greater
flexibility in ring setup. (For my reference, I would like to hear if
other labs have implemented such a system).
Future planned upgrades for the Duke Storage Ring are the installation of
a 34-meter long OK-5 FEL with four helical undulators, and construction of
a 1.2-GeV booster synchrotron for top-up injection with modifications to
the injection straight section and rf systems.
