I played with epics base on 64-bit sparc (Solaris) a number of years ago
(but never bothered to put it into widespread use). As far as I could
tell, everything with base was fine. I do not know about various
extensions, though.
The big caveat is to avoid mixing 32- and 64-bit libraries/applications.
Your approach of a separate HOST_ARCH (and hence installation directories)
with linux-x86_64 is likely necessary. Depending upon how various
distributions have configured gcc defaults, it may also be desirable to
explicitly set the compiler flags (-m32 for linux-x86 and -m64 for
linux-x86_64) so you don't inadvertently get a mix within an install
directory depending upon the build host.
