edm build issue

I am in the process of building an updated EPICS collection for our
control system.

I've encountered no particular issues with base-3.14.12rc1  nor with
synApps 5.5

In an attempt to build edm 1.12.39, compilation fails in file
lib/remFileOpen.cc

We use gcc/g++ 4.4  on a linux 2.6.32 kernel, libgcc 4.4.11, libc 2.11.2-7

Specifically, there are numerous invalid casts of const char* in
function calls.

What would be the cleanest patch/modification to this (and perhaps
other?) file which will work with g++ 4.4 and not likely to create
issues or unwanted complications?
