There are a number of drivers that inherit from areaDetector base classes and use the AD plugins but are built outside of the AD tree. These include the following in GitHub.com/epics-modules:
- dxp
- dxpSITORO 
- xspress3
- quadEM
- Dante

Those can be used as examples for what you want to do.
