I gave a talk on "Writing Motor Drivers" back in a 2015 EPICS training at the APS:

https://epics.anl.gov/docs/APS2015.php

Slides:

Video:

I wouldn't call it good, but much of the info is still relevant. I created the virtual motor controller, which now resides in the motorVMC module, specifically for the 2015 training sessions.
