Redefining _FORTIFY_SOURCE as 2 is a valid workaround, as this is the setting until Ubuntu 24 and on other flavors of Linux.

If you insist on backporting the fixes from EPICS 7, you should have a look at https://github.com/epics-base/epics-base/pull/517.

Be aware that there was no hard bug in the code. That pull request mainly fixes the issue of the runtime system shutting down applications because of a suspected buffer overflow if an application was compiled with _FORTIFY_SOURCE=3.
