HI Dave,
No, not really sketchy, that hook is deliberately called before the code that starts working on the database, so it is legal to do that. I haven't heard of anyone else doing that, but I wouldn't be concerned about it myself.
The dbReadDatabaseFP() routine is public, but again not used much outside of the IOC code.
