Subject: More Beam at Duke!

Dear Collaborators,

Please forgive me for using this forum in a way that perhaps was not
intended. But we are quite excited. Friday evening, October 21, 1994,
members of the Duke University Free Electron Laser Laboratory established
a high energy electron beam down the entire length of our new injection
linac. We encountered very few snags in the commissioning process. For
instance, it took only two hours to direct the beam from our low energy
spectrometer near the beginning of the linac, to the high energy spectrometer
at the end of the linac. Early next week, we will bring another 30 Megawatt
modulator on-line which will accelerate the beam up to the initial
injection energy of around 300 MeV. Injection into our storage ring
synchrotron is set for November 1st, less than two weeks from now. By
adding more linear accelerating sections, S-Band modulators, and through
ramping our storage ring, we intend to establish a high current, 1 GeV
stored electron beam within the next year. This beam will be used to pump
a variety of free electron lasers.
EPICS is a critical and well established component of our laboratory.
EPICS has been doing a very nice job of controlling the Mark III infrared
fel system here at Duke for the past year. Now we have successfully
commissioned our injection linac under the control of EPICS. We would like
to extend our thanks to all of you who have taken time from your busy
schedules to lend us a hand, or to share your work with us. These
accomplishments are the fruit of our collaborative efforts.

Best regards,

Carl Dickey
