I should have thought about this a little more before I paniced.
Please disregard my plea for help. I seem to remember (from a collaboration
meeting a long time ago) that one must use gnu make 3.71 or greater. The
system I'm presently using had an older version. Gnu make 3.74 solved my
problem.
