Subject: Hytec 2992 Problem in Repeat Mode

For the past 6 months or so, we at LANSCE have been experiencing intermittant
problems with our Hytec VSD-2992 serial CAMAC driver boards. The symptoms of
the problem are that the MR bit does not appear to stay set during
"repeat-mode" read operations -- which results in the board never coming
"ready" again after the first read of a "repeat-mode" block. The frequency
of this problem ranges from "never" to "occasional" to "almost always",
depending on the board.

Although Hytec was never able to reproduce the problem, they did manage to come
up with a solution which involves re-programming the PAL at IC111 (labled
RPT2). All of our boards are now working great in repeat mode, whereas before
we had about a 50% infant mortality rate.

If anybody else has been experiencing problems with repeat mode on the Hytec
boards, you can get a copy of the new PAL (labled RPT2A (or RPT3A for boards
with serial number 183 or higher)) from Harry Wardell at Hytec. Alternatively,
we may be able to send you a file to re-program your own.
