Sean,
I had a longer conversation with the Phase3 people about this problem and
we' found out that this happens when an unnamed property exists in any of
the schematic's symbols/wires. These things occur when you (unintentionally)
hit the Add/Modify' button in the Properties' box without having entered a
name in the appropriate field. Empty properties look like a single :' in
the property list.
You can track down the problem to:
[schematic2]
uniq 3
[tools]
[detail]
[cell use]
use elongin 3424 1063 100 0 elongin#0
xform 0 3744 1408

which runs perfectly, compared to
[schematic2]
uniq 3
[tools]
[detail]
[cell use]
use elongin 3424 1063 100 0 elongin#0
xform 0 3744 1408
p 3572 936 100 0 1 :

producing the mentioned crash.
Poor consistency checks...
