Tom,
Of course the root cause of the printing time problems
is the inefficiency of capturing a raw bitmap from the
screen and embedding this in postscript. We could get a
much better information packing density in the postscript
file if we embedded a program in DM that scanned the
display list and converted it directly to postscript.
We have not pursued this in the past because we were
were not encouraged by the magnitude of the task vs. the
expected return. Perhaps the size of this task would be more
reasonable, and achievable, if we initially compromised
and converted all active elements to text thereby
avoiding the need to code a postscript rendering engine
for bars, valuators, etc. It is also possible that
this program could be patched as a library that could
be shared between dm and medm.
