It would be worthwhile to note that the report that is sited was written
in 1997. I believe that a lot of attention has been paid to a variety of
these issues - particularly the demonstrated use of a RDB for generating
an EPICS database, SNL shortcomings, ease of installation, and
improvements to various other extensions.
It may also be worthwhile noting that the investment that could have been
made in improving these tools for use at the LHC detectors has been
made evaluating commercial control tool packages. I believe that the
number is somewhere in the 10 man-year range. A lot of these shortcomings
could have been handled with that. It will be interesting to see how
much these commercial tools cost and just what level of service they
provide for a 1 million signal system.
