The LHC experiments at CERN are now considering various control
systems for use on ATLAS, CMS, and ECP/C0. As an aid in evaluating
EPICS, they constructed a prototype application and have issued a
report on their experience. The conclusion, which is short, is worth
reading as is the remainder of the report. It may be found at the

Speaking from the viewpoint of a user and extender of EPICS on a
large high-energy physics experiment, I concur with a number of the
critical comments in the summary. I would point out, however, that we
(the D0 experiment at Fermilab) are correcting several of the
perceived shortcomings, e.g. a centralized database (Oracle) for
generating the .db files and a global alarm handling system. It is my
opinion that EPICS constitutes a flexible base which may be extended
to meet the needs of the large experiments and that the effort invested
in these extensions will bring significant returns.
