I agree that this problem needs to solved. I could accomplish this by adding
more patches to the current protocol and API. However, my current plans were to place this 
task in the next release where we have some freedom to redesign the current protocol and the
current client side API while remaining backwards compatible. This is driven by my desire to 
maintain a less complex code base for EPICS R3.14.
