It turns out that the problem was due to a Linux version mismatch. Adam
was building his program on Redhat 7 (libc 6), but linking against EPICS
libraries built on Redhat 4.2 (libc 5) (we have to maintain both for the
moment).
With the correct version of the libraries the program works as expected.
