Kay,
I would suggest a small modification to your proposal. As in the
present case, there frequently is a need to add a few more "bits" of
behavior-controlling mode to a record. Rather than adding a new field
every time someone needs to add new "behavior", I suggest adding a
bit-encoded long word to the record and assign the bits, as needed,
from the low-order end. As problems, like the clamp behavior, arise
the next unused bit(s) can be assigned to hold the new mode state.
In building an EPICS-based control system for the D0 experiment, I
decided to add a few custom record types to handle the complex behavior
of some of our devices. All of these records have just such a mode
field to handle the class of problem that you have encountered.
