There are two records in the synApps package that would help. The sseq
record is a variant of the seq record that can hold, select, and transport strings.
The scalcout record is a variant on the calcout record that has string input and output fields, and can operate on strings and numbers. See
http://www.aps.anl.gov/xfd/bcda/medm_help/yysCalcoutRecord_full.adl.html
for more info.
