There may still be a
downside of having a DOS file system with 8.3 size filenames.
VxWorks supports an extension to the MS-DOS FAT filesystem whereby you can
format the disk to use long filenames - IIRC they basically just increased
the size of the filename field in the directory entry. The resulting disk
is not compatible with Win95/NT/XP's method of supporting long filenames
on FAT, but on a Flash disk which could never be mounted by a PC anyway
that really doesn't matter.
