alarm handler beeps on Linux

Hi all,

after finally getting our new alarm handler machine (and old
Linux notebook) set up correctly that it send out email when
there are alarms I checked into why it won't beep and found
that the 'default' directory has beeps disabled.
A copy of the solaris directory to 'Linux' fails to compile
because one of the include files isn't in the place where it
is expected and if I include one that we have on the system
I get numerous error messages.
I tried to implement a simple 'printf ("\007");' but can't
testthis from my desktop as my desktop doesn't beep at all
(tried all setup things I could think of, but as I don't have
a speaker - and usually don't need one - our systems people
told me that it just may not beep)

Before I go and try to implement something (probably at 14,000ft
elevation), has anybody already implemented audio for the
alarm handler for Linux?
