My 2 pence on naming conventions:

   * Have your naming convention ready before the project starts (e.g.
     just take the diamond one).
   * Make it known to _everyone_ (Otherwise not even the label on the
     cable will match the one on the device).
   * Have a real big and mean guy watching that everyone adheres to it.

You'll fail anyway but if you stick to the three rules your failure will 
be not so thoroughly. Good luck :-)
