 Colleagues,

The Spallation Neutron Source in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, has today posted three leadership openings in the Controls Group.  An excerpt is given below - the complete posting can be found at:

https://jobs-ornl.icims.com/ornl_jobs/jobs/candidate/job.jsp?jobid=2389&mode=view

Two of these positions are for leaders of small teams (~ 6 – 10) responsible for the operation and upgrade of the existing control system. Suitable candidates will also be considered for the position of Controls Group Leader, soon to be vacated upon the retirement of yours truly.

With an active and well-funded ramp-up and upgrade project in full swing, life at SNS continues to be both interesting and challenging. (How do you control a 2MW beam with minimal losses?)  Life in Tennessee is good and the cost of living is low compared with the locations of many other large accelerator facilities.

Give me a call or drop me a line if you want to learn more.  Or just go ahead and respond to the ad.

Dave

Summary:

The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory invites applications for a Control Systems Team Leader. SNS is the most powerful short-pulse spallation neutron source in the world. This unique facility provides opportunities for up to 2000 researchers each year from universities, national labs, and industry for basic and applied research and technology development. The diverse fields of study include materials science, magnetic materials, polymers and complex fluids, chemistry, and biology. Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science, SNS began operations in June 2006.

Responsibilities & Qualifications:

Successful candidate is responsible for leading a team of software and/or electronics professionals and technicians in the operation, maintenance, improvement and long-range development of the ~100,000 channel SNS Control System. The system uses the EPICS Toolkit with ~500 processors running Linux, Windows and VxWorks (for Input-Output Controllers packaged in VME) distributed in a conventional three-layer architecture on a Gigabit Ethernet backbone as well as a fast timing and synchronization system and a fast machine protection system. In addition to the accelerator, the control system also provides instrumentation and process control for target, cryogenic and conventional systems.
