Now since I have my first softIOC working, I thought I add some extensions to my EPICS 3.14.9 installation. First I tried the Extension Top (new method), which I installed in epics/R3.14.9/extensions, where epics/R3.14.9/base was already configured and installed. I examined CONFIG, CONFIG_SITE, and RELEASE files in extensions/configure and ran make in extensions/configure according to the instructions in README without errors. Then I unpacked medm3_1_1.tar.gz into epics/R3.14.9/ and the files got copied into extensions/src as expected. To build medm I
cd extensions/src/medm
make
And this is what I got:

zms@esaux1 $ make
Makefile:20: ../../../config/CONFIG_EXTENSIONS: No such file or directory
Makefile:22: ../../../config/RULES_DIRS: No such file or directory
gmake: *** No rule to make target `../../../config/RULES_DIRS'. Stop.
zms@esaux1 $ pwd
/afs/slac.stanford.edu/g/esa/esalib/app1/epics/R3.14.9/extensions/src/medm

It seems that it expects config directory in epics/R3.14.9. The only config directory is in epics/R3.14.9/base. Is that the one it expected to find? Or should there be one in extensions? Furthermore nowhere could I find CONFIG_EXTENSIONS. I see such a file exists in older versions of epics, specifically in 3.14.6. Am I reading the README file incorrectly and consequently skipping some important step? How could I go around this difficulty to be able to build medm (and other extensions as well. I also tried probe with the same results)? I could create a link in extensions to epics/R3.14.9/base/config and copy CONFIG_EXTENSIONS from another version of epics. Is this safe do?

I also tried Configure Files (Old method) with similar unsatisfactory results. Please, advise.
