Dear All,

I am trying to use EPICS in Debian 4.0 latest release. But I am unable
to build the base itself. I feel some more packages are to be
installed.

I am requesting those who have used EPICS on Debian based linux to
tell me what are the extra packages I should load for running epics
base, medm, probe, channel archiver etc. on Debian 4.0 Linux.
I can't remember that any package was missing while building EPICS base, but for the extensions (esp. the Motif-applications) you definitely need a Motif-library. I strongly suggest to install the "original" Open Motif packages (libmotif3 and libmotiv-dev) instead of the lesstif-packages. Unfortunately the Open Motif packages are *not* available in Debian 4.0 (etch - the current "stable" distribution) and have to be installed from the current "testing" distribution.
The Channel Archiver brings an own set of source tar-balls of ThirdParty software-modules, that you as well should unpack, build and install to be used when building the ChannelArchiver.

Other than that, you may have encountered some perl-modules missing. We install these as soon as we encounter any perl-error-message like (Can't locate XYZ.pm in @INC (@INC contains: ...).
I unfortunately don't have a list of packages at hand right now, but I'll add a list of modules we additoinally install on our development and our production systems later.

Additionally, some Error-Messages from the build-process or from running the EPICS-applications will sure help to identify the missing packages. Feel free, to send me these messages and I might remember/be able to look up what we did here at BESSY.

Regards,
Thomas
