Apparently the issue is related to whether I run edm remotely or
locally.

This is the error I get when using ssh 

epics@cr0opi1 $ edm

This is the WARNING I get when running edm on the local machine
Note that in this case, edm starts

~/prod/cr0opi1/epics-lyncean/usr/src/drv/zt4612/edm
