Sorry, again not an answer to your question:
Why don't you want the channel archiver for archiving?
It's quite power full and meant to be used for archiving.

Actually, I use the channel archiver at the moment. I'm probably going to continue using it, however from reading the SDDS documentation, I like the idea of being able to manage independent "...Self Describing..." data sets around. Some of our compliance reporting targets could use that 'independence' so I'd be able to package up the official data for a report, generate the report from that data, and then be able to archive that data away. Currently I'm having to use individual Access (ugh!) database files because of the amount of data I have to archive monthly.
Perhaps what would be better might be a method that would allow me to extract a SDDS dataset from a Channel Archive historical data set.
