We are controlling a couple of furnaces via a Eurotherm 2416 with RS-232-C interface. I don't know if it uses the same protocol as the 2404 though, but our code might be a starting point for you.

The protocol of the Eurotherm 2416 includes BCC checksums, which Dirk Zimoch's stream driver couldn't handle at the time I wrote the EPICS support. As a result, our code is flat EPICS database of soft records with an snl program calling functions to send and receive messages to the device via a pseudo-terminal VxWorks device driver.
