We use streamdevice and asyn to monitor and control Wiener VME crates via a web interface.  We build streamdevice with support for regular expressions (PCRE) -- see http://epics.web.psi.ch/software/streamdevice/doc/setup.html#pre.  I will send you the database and streamdevice protocol files.
