Hi:
You're right that "Probe" was simply missing in the
"Basic EPICS" version of CSS.
So was the Preference GUI for configuring Channel Access.
Sorry for having overlooked that. Guess Friday is not a
good time for publishing stuff.
The web page now has new binaries:
http://ics-web.sns.ornl.gov/css/products.html
The Data Browser should have been OK and still works for me under
OS X (Java 1.5), Redhat Linux (Java 1.5) and Windows XP (Java 1.6),
so we'll have to figure out why that's not working for you.

Yes, it's a file
.metadata/.log
in the workspace directory, which defaults to
<your home directory>/CSS-Workspaces/Default .
Check the CSS File/Switch Workspace... menu option
to see the current workspace.
