Thanks very much.  I had an older version of OpenMotif around (2.2.4).  I compiled against that and now things are working fine.  It appears that OpenMotif 2.3.2 was the culprit.

EDM maintainers -- perhaps this should be added to a 'known problems' file in the distribution.
