John,
I am not sure that the Firewire driver actually needs the MFC SDK. What happens if you comment out the include of afxwin.h? The Roper driver probably does need MFC, but Firewire may not.

Subject: building areaDetector firewire support on Windows
All,
I wen to build areaDetector with Microsoft Visual Express edition but in the directory firewireWinSrc I run into the error
C:\USER_LOCAL\epics\support\areaDetector-1-6\ADApp\firewireWinSrc>make
make -C O.win32-x86 -f ../Makefile TOP=../../.. T_A=win32-x86 install
make[1]: Entering directory `C:/USER_LOCAL/epics/support/areaDetector-1-6/ADApp/firewireWinSrc/O.win32-x86'
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `../../../include/os/WIN32/afxwin.h', needed
by `firewireWinDCAM.obj'. Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory `C:/USER_LOCAL/epics/support/areaDetector-1-6/ADApp/firewireWinSrc/O.win32-x86'
make: *** [install.win32-x86] Error 2
Which as far as I can tell is because the Express Edition does not include the MFC SDK. I don't think MinGW does either.
I had previously used Visual Studio 2005 so I didn't run into this problem.
Ideas?
