We also had the E5810As at the Australian Synchrotron. Never needed to boot as far as I recalled - although the GPIB devices further downstream often caused issues.
As for cost - well, it's only money. We also used a Cosylab MicroIOC with a card for GPIB interfaces. Cost was about the same and you got the whole IOC at the same time. Check out http://www.microioc.com/ if you want to.

We also have a couple of these E5810As at Diamond. I had the same
experience... fairly reliable, easy to use (with a web interface). Very
occasionally need to reboot. But expensive.
