We have had similar problems with Heidenhain encoders, in our case it tends to lose communication with the endat cards. Our encoders have some lead shielding but not sufficient to stop 3GeV electrons. The shieldings helps, redesigning the devices to have them away from the beam pipe helps more. We have just started to work with magneto-resistive absolute encoder design that so far appears to be holding up well.

We avoid putting electronics in the tunnel, however we have from time to time and in a few limited cases permanently installed electronics. We generally try to keep them off of beam path and on the inside of the ring. In most of our cases they have been for signal processing applications where we have made the trade off between minimising cable lengths vrs accepting the shorter lifetime on the equipment.

Don't know about the devices you listed, but I remember we had Heidenhain
position measurement systems near the vacuum chamber and these things became
very non-linear after a few weeks (i.e. they still gave back positions but
completely wrong ones).

Cheers
