If this helps I install the following packages to compile MEDM on Ubuntu
1204 and Ubuntu 1210.
apt-get install autoconf libtool build-essential libmotif-dev
apt-get install x11proto-print-dev libboost-program-options-dev
apt-get install libxp-dev libreadline-gplv2-dev libxmu-dev
apt-get install libxpm-dev # for StripTool
apt-get install re2c # for sequencer in synApps
apt-get install xfonts-100dpi # for all the larger MEDM fonts
libxft2 libxft2-dbg are not needed.
