The problem was that the master index file had reached its maximum size (thanks to John Dobbins and Jiro Fujita for the help).  I would welcome suggestions on how to deal with the gap in the data from when this file maxed out to now.  Is there a way to get the archive engine to include all index files written after a certain date in the new master_index file?

James,

I have only used the 32 bit version so I am not familiar with the limitations of the 64 bit version.

With the 32 bit version we do the following:

Data more than 6 months old moves to tape. However the size of the index file constantly grows as it still contains entries for data moved to tape. When the master index reaches 2 GB (producing the symptom you describe) we rebuild the master index with the index tool (described in the Archiver manual). No data is lost in the process. After rebuild the master index might be 1GB, but this will last us many months.

This is, I believe, the 64 bit version.  The master_index file is over 2G though...  Hmm.  If the memory size is the issue, any suggestions for how to reduce the size without losing recent data?  And, just as important, include the data since April 27th?
Thanks
James

Subject: channel archiver questions

Hello all,
The epics channel archiver running here at STAR is behaving strangely.  The problem is that I can't see any variable values in archive viewer after April 27th around 10 am.  However, there are index files being written by each engine up through today.  The index files are of a typical size, so they have information in them, but for some reason it isn't showing up.

Perhaps there is a problem in whatever mechanism combines the individual index files into the master index file for the entire archiver?  Does anyone have an experience with a problem like this?

Thanks very much!
James
