Perhaps not the same problem but just in case: A similar issue we've had this past year turned out to be how the window manager (we're using FVWM) handles Unicode. If the application tries to put some character (such as EN DASH) into the window title that the font doesn't support, X11 (or maybe the window manager) would hang or crash. A variation from years ago: DM would hang the window manager when it tried to display a CONTROL-S.
