I am not sure what you mean by "this implementation". Do you mean an areaDetector driver for an analog frame grabber? If so, it seems like a reasonable thing to write for situations like yours where there are many existing analog cameras to support. I can't find any discussion of this on tech-talk since areaDetector was developed (there are some discussions pre-2007). There have been discussions of CameraLink frame grabbers, but those are digital not analog.

I don't have any BlackFly cameras in production. I do have one for testing, and it seems to work well. I have many other Point Grey models in production (Grasshopper3, Flea3, etc.) and have been quite happy with them. I also use a lot of Prosilica cameras as well.

Mark,
I'll chime in here. We currently are using 6 GiGE cameras with areaDetector, although we have many analogue cameras that we would like to be able to utilize areaDetector. Our limitations of going to all network cameras, is that these cameras can be bandwidth intensive. Also, with the amount of analogue cameras we have it just does not make sense to change out all of them. The cost of one or two cameras is not really a concern as some of the analogue cameras that we are using, especially in the setup that Kevin mentioned are upwards of $1000. I know it is not a new idea to use EPICS controls for Frame Grabbers, I am surprised that no one has implemented a driver using your package.
Just curious, what is your opinion about this implementation of areaDetector? I know that I have seen this been asked on Tech Talk before, to which you have replied. Has anybody fed any information back to you about having implemented it?

Thanks so much for your reply,

Hi Kevin,
I don't know of any areaDetector support for analog frame grabbers. Is there a hard requirement for analog cameras? There are quite inexpensive GigE cameras now available with areaDetector support. For example, the Point Grey Blackfly cameras are under $500 for 2048x1536 at 35 frames/s, and under $300 for 1280x960 at 52 frames/s.

Hi Folks,
We are setting up Area Detector for an electron gun test stand on a linux box. We intend to use both analog and digital cameras.
Please comment on which frame grabber we should purchase.
Thanks in advance,
Kevin
