You must help 'caput' (all Channel Access clients) to find the specified 
process variables. Channel Access uses a well defined set of environment 
variables to configure the method used to locate PVs on a network. One 
of them is $EPICS_CA_ADDR_LIST, which is used to define a comma-sprated 
list of IP addresses of hosts that may be running an EPICS IOC holding 
the PV(s) of interest. It sounds like you are running the caput CA 
client on the same host as the IOC, so the value "localhost" may be good 
enough. Before running your CA clients from a bash shell session:
export EPICS_CA_ADDR_LIST="localhost"

If the IOC and CA client are on different hosts, you would use the setting:

export EPICS_CA_ADDR_LIST="the.ioc.host.ip"

where 'the.ioc.host.ip' is in either DNS name format or dotted decimal 
IP address format.
This assumes that you are using the  EPICS CA TCP/IP ports that were 
configured as defaults when EPICS base was built. Both the IOC and CA 
clients will default to the same, compatible ports unless modified by 
setting $EPICS_CA_REPEATER_PORT &/or $EPICS_CA_SERVER_PORT.
