For the benefit of any recent EDM users with this problem I have just spent much too much time tracking down the cause of the same message on a source build from base-3.14.12.5 and edm -1-12-103. This was built on a VirtualBox image with 64 bit Linux Mint 18 Sarah. As this is the only thread mentioning the problem I will add my solution:
I had made an error in my export of the EDMPVOBJECTS environment variable to the shell in which I was launching EDM. Correctly exporting EDMPVOBJECTS resolved the problem for me (although my font definitions still need some work).
