Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System

Hi Joey,
Looking at the portescap web site, they offer
a few different encoders. You should explore them. To use your
potentiometer feedback, you would need to set up the
potentiometer as a voltage divider and digitize the output using
an ADC, which involves more hardware. If you tack an encoder on
the back of your motor, it will, I think, take up less space
than your potentiometer solution, since the controller can
handle the encoder signals directly. It looks like your motor is
attached to a reducing gearbox, so the encoder could be
low-resolution if it is attached directly to the (fast) motor
shaft.

Hi Mark,
We have an analog based feedback loop using a potentiometer,
which is as close as we can get for exact positioning. The
reason why we aren't using an encoder is because there is a
space constraint and we plan on implementing this system with 40
motors. We're worried that this inconsistency with the VAL field
will not work with our analog feedback and we would like to know
more about it before proceeding with our project
Do you have any tips on how to proceed with this route
using a potentiometer for a feedback loop?
Best,
