We chose to build the modules contained in synApps separately. This
allows us to focus on the parts we need and upgrade modules whenever a
new version gets released. The main advantage synApps seems to offer is
compatibility between modules. For the subset of modules we are using,
compatibility turns out to be manageable, though (reading the release
notes covers most of it).

P.S.: In case your lab is lacking the manpower to keep all your software
packages up to date you might want want to consider switching to an OS
that allows you to use pre-canned packages like the RPMs used by Iter or
the Debian packages used at various labs including NSLS-II (BNL), FRIB
(MSU), S-DALINAC (Technische Universitaet Darmstadt). They make
upgrading easy and come with built-in dependencies that reflect the
conditions necessary to ensure compatibility between modules.
