Probably because originally these were the sort of devices used to video chat/stream to other people over the Ethernet, and then when it became more common to link these with a HTTP server and access the images over the WWW ‘web cam’ caught on as a marketing term. But your right that *now* a webcam implies that it is networked device that hosts itself. Bruno’s original request, BTW, is to support over 70 usb cameras. Since cheap usb video camera can be as cheap at $5 a pop while cheap IP webcams may be closer to $40+, I can see the appeal. Just seems that an easier solution would be to save images locally and host them via a local http server, or ADURL which can read local images. I know I am slightly off topic here, But - out of curiosity - why would you call such devices webcams? They seem to be USB only, with no Ethernet or other IP interface. Hi Bruno, We are working on AD EPICS Driver for USB Video Class (UVC) devices, which includes webcams, many mini-microscopes, etc. Libuvc depends on several packages: libusb-1.0-0 and libusb-1.0-0-dev must both be installed. Some detectors that support the UVC standard: Kazimierz Gofron NSLS-II Controls Group Brookhaven National Laboratory (p) +1 (631) 344 5283 (f) +1 (631) 344 8085 (e) [email protected] (w) www.bnl.gov/nsls2
