I had sent this answer yesterday but forgot once again that I need to manually add tech-talk to the cc: now. Grrr.

Subject: RE: 2D waveform records
The EPICS database, records, and Channel Access handles 1-D arrays, not 2-D.
That being said the EPICS areaDetector software is commonly used with 2-D, 3-D and higher dimensional arrays. EPICS waveform records are used. The waveform record treats the array as 1-D, but there are other
records that describe the actual number of dimensions and dimension sizes of the array. The waveform record just needs to be big enough to hold the entire array.
Mark
Is it possible to have 2D waveform in EPICS? I have a waveform PV called ScanResults with type “DBR_DOUBLE[4]”. Would it be possible for it to have a type “DBR_DOUBLE[2][2]”? I notice the asynPortDriver::readFloat64Array function has a
field for nElements but does not seem to have a field for dimensions.
