I'm confident that I can distinguish between the two cases.
There is a front panel indication if a command error occurs,
which I see if I send eg. '*IDN?'.  (As noted, this device
uses a non-standard 'ID?' instead)

Also, I can send commands other than 'BEEP' and 'ID?' and see effect.
eg. changing the measurement setup.

"Send" with 'BEEP'.  "Query" with 'ID?' and others which should send back something.
