Hi Han,

I have a silly question about EPICS IOC and its client applications.
Are they OK with IPv6 addresses only?

No, neither network protocol currently works over IPv6.

The Channel Access protocol was designed long before IPv6 was thought about and since it passes 4-byte IP addresses in some of its messages it cannot work over IPv6 at all. I guess it’s possible that someone might try to add that in the future, but I haven’t heard of anyone thinking about doing so.

I originally thought that the PVA protocol was being designed to work over IPv6, but Michael tells me that while pvAccess can pass IPv6 addresses around, the software hasn’t been coded properly to work with the rest of the IPv6 stack. Modifications to support this are probably somewhat more feasible if someone can provide the resources (money or programmer effort) necessary to modify the code.

HTH,

- Andrew
