Generally, you should not run the IOC with root privileges as that opens up potential security risks. More typically, a service account is created specifically to run the IOC with privileges appropriate for what the IOC needs to access. The system service responsible for starting the IOC can su to the IOC account, set appropriate env variables, and start the IOC via procServer or otherwise.
