Did you try:

> $ pvput GMDTest:NTMultiChannel 'channelName=["GMDTest:NTScalar"]'

This is meant to be JSON syntax, so strings need to be quoted.

> $ pvput GMDTest:NTMultiChannel '{"channelName":["GMDTest:NTScalar"]}'
> 
> JSON syntax not supported by this build.

This should work.  It was a regression fixed with >=7.0.4
