The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is the national synchrotron research facility on the University of Saskatchewan campus in Saskatoon. This facility produces high-intensity synchrotron light, millions of times brighter than sunlight, to explore the nature and structure of molecules and serves national and international users from academia, industry, and government institutions. The CLS facilitates scientific research aimed at finding solutions for global challenges in agriculture, health, advanced materials, and the environment.

CLSI is now accepting applications for senior Control Systems Analysts within our Controls and Instrumentation Development (CID) Department. CID provides software and hardware for control and feedback across all systems in the facility, ranging from temperature monitors in particle accelerator systems through beamline motors to X-ray spectrometers at scientific end-stations. Members of CID collaborate with scientists and engineers to design and implement software and hardware used to perform experiments, acquire data, coordinate motion control, and operate the accelerator.  Senior controls analysts will be major contributors to the scientific program at CLSI by undertaking technical design projects and implementing and maintaining the control systems software, hardware, and instrumentation on which the research depends. This role and its activities are very much project driven and continually evolve, providing an excellent opportunity for a wide variety of experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop and commission control and data acquisition software, hardware, and instrumentation
  • Co-ordinate with other departments in the development, deployment, and operation of control systems
  • Create and expand software systems and tools used in the development and maintenance of scientific software
  • Support and maintain existing deployed solutions for accelerator and scientific operations
  • Work with other senior developers on large projects
  • Guide the technical contributions of junior staff
  • Ensure that every activity is undertaken with the highest reasonable level of safety, and actively contribute to a safe work environment

Required Qualifications:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or Engineering Physics
  • Seven or more years experience in software development in a technical environment

Qualifications Considered an Asset:

  • Competency with Linux
  • Knowledge and experience in software development with C/C++ and/or Python
  • Familiarity with software tools such as integrated development environments, automated builds, source code control and issue tracking
  • Background in a research support environment
  • Experience developing distributed control systems and/or real time data acquisition systems
  • Work on embedded systems or device drivers
  • Experience operating electronic devices or measurement instruments
  • Experience with the EPICS (Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System) software framework

Remuneration: Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. A comprehensive benefits package, including supplemental health & dental, life insurance, pension plan, and four weeks’ vacation is part of a competitive compensation package.

To Apply: Submit a resume along with a cover letter and references, in confidence, online at www.lightsource.ca/careers. Applications will be considered as of January 10, 2022. While all applicants are thanked for their interest, only short-listed candidates will be contacted.

Canadian Light Source Inc. is an equal opportunity employer and encourages members of designated groups (women, Indigenous people, people with disabilities and visible minorities) to self-identify on their applications.
