Subject: Hard-real time control platforms compatible with EPICS

All,

A recent change in business model by one of our suppliers is causing us to re-evaluate platform selection for some systems at our facility, and I’d like to get a sense of what everybody else is using for high-speed control and data acquisition applications ‘underneath’ (or in conjunction with) EPICS.

I’m specifically interested in digital control systems capable of meeting hard real-time performance requirements for fairly complex ‘analog’ control loops with hundreds of I/O points (mix of analog and digital) in under 1 millisecond.   ‘Hard real-time’ in this context means that the system must real all inputs, execute one cycle of the control algorithm, and set all outputs within the 1 millisecond window, every time.  The question covers both hardware and software – I’d prefer not to have to fall back to assembly language.

Would anybody mind sharing what’s working for them?

Regards,
